Brook Trout, One of Canadas Most Loved Trout
Brook trout are one of the most popular game fish in Canada. These fish can be found in the northern most parts of North America. What is so great about these fish? Is there a great location to go brook trout fishing? And, what type of lure and equipment do you need for trout fishing then? To answer these questions, you can begin by knowing something about the brook trout itself. Then, you can decide if brook trout fishing is something for you. Brook trout, or Salvelinus Fontinalis, are also known by other names. You may have heard them called Speckled Trout, Aurora Trout, Sea Trout, Brookie or several other names. The fist itself ranges from 10-12 inches, but several larger fish have been caught as well. Their average weight tends to be about 5 pounds, again depending on the length. The largest brook trout caught came in at 21 inches long and 14.5 pounds. That fish, a very rare occurrence, was caught in Ontario on the Nipigon River. These fish range in color, but mostly brook trout are dark green to a light brown with sliver sides and even pale spots as well. As with other types of fish, their color tends to get deeper and richer during spawning. The male can develop a hook like feature on the jaw during breeding season. As for brook trout fishing, the best locations to do so are in the maritime provinces of Canada. Brook trout like water that is clean, well oxygenated, and usually are found in streams and lakes. To get some brook trout fishing in, an individual has the best chance using live bait or by artificial fly. Also, spin casting has been found to be effective at catching brook trout. These fish seem to be a good size and beautiful creatures of the north. For those planning a brook trout fishing trip, brook trout spawn in late summer or early autumn. Join Your Local Bass Club Having been an avid basser for years, and not having the wherewithal to purchase a boat, I've often felt cheated and frustrated about not being able to get out to deeper waters (where I was certain the real bass were). Having succumbed to this delimma for some 40 years or more, I finally had something come my way that I never knew existed: my local bass fishing club. I mean, I knew bass clubs existed, but I didn't know they were for me. For one thing, how can you join a bass fishing club if you don't have a boat. Additionally, isn't it just the best bass fishermen that are in these clubs? These guys do tournaments and such. Not sure if I could measure up. Low and behold, the old saying "you won't know if you don't go" proved itself once again. Thanks to an Internet buddy, I was enlightened. I got the address and went to my first bass club meeting. It was simple, friendly, fun and I was fishing with them that weekend. First off, let's address the notion that you have to be a great bass fisherman to belong to one of these clubs. This is not true. In fact, most of these anglers are people just like me, only with a little more experience (remember, I didn't have a boat - I was bank fishing). Most of these people are happy to share that experience with you. Secondly, you do not have to have a boat. In fact, most clubs are looking for non-boaters to help share the expense of the trip with someone who owns a boat. Brilliant! That really surprised me. Why didn't I know this years ago? It makes perfect sense, yet somehow this information escaped me. Owning your own boat can be expensive. A decent boat purchased new can easily run you around $15,000. Ouch. Then there is the issue of storage, insurance, fuel, the trailer, something to pull it with, maintenance and a whole slew of other expenses that come with the package. But not for the non-boater. I paid my bass club dues (very affordable) and within 2 days I was out with the gang on my first local bass club fishing tournament - in a boat. My share of the costs was extremely reasonable compared to those in the last paragraph. It was a 3 day trip and we even shared the cost of a room. Don't ask how the fishing was; that's a whole other article. In this club, we go out once a month to a different lake and have our own little bass tournament. Each time we go out, the non-boaters are matched up with a boater (also a different one each time). This way, you get to learn a little something from everyone. So, if you are bank bound like I was, and want to head out for more exciting fishing, go online or open up the phone book and contact you local bass fishing club. You could be out on the boat in no time. Whether or not you catch any fish remains to be seen. Further North to Alaska With the excitement of my first trip to Alaska still fresh and percolating in my mind, I can hardly keep from telling fishing friends and aquaintances of my ensuing trip. They do put up a fight though and that can be a great challenge to the fisherman. But, because of the difficultly to catch the brown trout, this fish has not been a big time game fish. Fly Fishing for Saltwater Salmon with Surface Flies One of the greatest thrills in Pacific Northwest fly fishing is bringing large anadramous fish to a surface fly. While surface fishing in the saltwater is not as popular as subsurface fly fishing, feeding saltwater coho salmon will take a popper quite aggressively. Neah Bay is the best place to cast flies for coho salmon in Washington State, and I believe it's also the best place to catch coho / silver salmon on a cast popper. We began to talk, of course, I wanted to know all about him and he began to tell me about how he became champion. Now, I do want to say one thing here, I forget what he told me and I don't even know for sure if there is such a tournament for the World Top Water Championship but I watched this guy fish. Fishing The Henrys Fork - Box Canyon It is easy to get intimidated by world class rivers. Selecting the Right Tackle One of the most important things to consider when fly fishing is choosing your tackle the right way. Many people overlook this important factor and start with the wrong assumptions. They first buy the rod, then the line to match the rod, then the reel and then they buy the flies they will need to fish. The fact is the flies are the most important in determining weather or not you will be catching any fish. Fishing the Points Sometimes bass fishing in a big lake can be overwhelming. Do you fish deep? Fish the banks? Are they out in open water? What? This will depend on the lake, the time of year, the time of day and many other factors such as air and water temperature. There is no short answer; no hard and fast rule. But mostly, to put yourself on fish, you are going to be looking for cover and structure. Cover is vegetation and things like that where bass can hide. Structure is things like drop offs, road beds, creeks, stumps and such. There is a good way to combine these and that is to look for points on the lake; especially points near quick drop offs and creek channels. Points are areas of the shore that come to a 'point' in the lake. Often these will be on the outside of, or the entrance to, coves, but not always. That's just to give you an idea of how one might look. It simply sticks out from the rest of the shoreline. Quick drop offs are important because bass will hang around these points and depend on the drop offs as an escape route in case trouble comes calling. So if you see a point in just a few feet of water, and see that not too far from the point the water quickly gets deep, this point might be a good prospect for holding fish. The point itself should be fished thoroughly, but you should also seek bass along the sides of points, especially if there is cover like grass, weeds, reeds, etc. If the point is off of a cove, very early morning or the evening might be a good time to fish the cove. But, as the day progresses hit the points. If you don't find the bass on the point, try the deeper water next to the point. They may have retreated to it as the daylight and the heat came. Bass try to avoid sunlight because it hurts their eyes. I prefer to use plastics on points; worms, crawfish and lizards. I like to Texas Rig these to be weedless. I also like to use a Carolina Rig which helps to keep the bait in the strike zone longer and gives it a little more action. You could also do well using a spinnerbait or crankbait. So, very early in the morning hit the coves. As the bite slows, you will want to move out to the points where the fish have gone. Then, as that bite slows, try fishing plastics in the deeper waters next to the points. As evening comes on, you will reverse this process, heading back to the points, then into the coves. It's important to understand the movement of the fish and keep up with them. Certainly, you will find a lone drifter now and then, but using this method you will be much more likely to be consistent in your catch. After all, you are out there to catch bass, right? Good luck. Gear Needed for Fishing with Nymphs Now that we've covered what nymph fly fishing is all about, let's next take a look at what sort of fly fishing gear you're going to need to do it. While nymph fly fishing uses pretty much the same gear you use when dry fly fishing, there is a few small items that any successfully nymph fisherman will want to have. These items are strike indicators, some small weights, and a good pair of fly fishing sunglasses.
